While we all wait anxiously for Perry v. Brown to make its way through the courts, Equality California has started considering the possibility of returning the fight to the ballot box in 2012. Although I have been consistently optimistic on the likely outcome of Perry, it is nice to see EQ taking the initial steps to set up a back-up plan. Given the failure of 2008, it will be interesting to see how EQ adapts its strategy in 2012, and what the ultimate outcome would be.
Should Equality California try again at the ballot box? Will they succeed this time around?

The gays had everything going for them in 08′, but it wasn’t enough. The California voters were loud and clear, they don’t like gay marriage, so how are things better for them now? Personally, I think it is a disgusting shame that the gays need to ask permission, via votes, to get married when they already had the right. Furthermore, I think it’s a disgusting shame that the gays need to ask permission, via votes, to get married where they never had the right?
Since when do Americans tell others whom they may or may not marry? Thanks for nothing, anti-gay Christian/Mormon bigots. You own this.
It’s been done already – – 48%-52%. Why would it go back to the ballot box? Isn’t it up to the courts to decide on the constitutionality of it? If someone can explain to me this (no for or against Prop 8 moralities, just the legal voting process) I’d appreciate it.
I say go for it….HOWEVER, it will be costly (again). EQCA will have to out-clever, through TV ads, to counter all the anti-gay rhetoric that NOM/MORMONS/Focus on the Fam….ETC…will be airing(LYING) ads they will be airing, with their huge $$$.
I say go for it…but this time around, stop playing it safe. Those glossy, celebrity voiced over ads the last time were stupid. It’s time to get real. Show the impact and the pain of prop 8. Show real gay families. Show the hate from the anti-gay people behind prop 8 and the right wing. Show clips from the prop 8 trial reenactments, show clips from fringe hatemongers like Bryan Fischer and the AFA…and those who testified against equality in the Maryland marriage debates. This is politics, people. You want my money, you need to tell my story. Not hire stupid celebrities to voice over commercials with a bunch of crappy stock footage from the 1940’s.
I don’t think it would be necessary. The courts need to overturn the ban indefinitely. The main argument of protectmarriage is procreation in which one of the 9th circuit judges said that if it was about procreation than non children marriages or those unable to procreate for any reason shouldn’t be allowed… also in these campaigns they need to show statistics of how many heterosexuals have married more than once or twice, how many of those marriages ended due to infidelity, how many marriages are without children, how many married for money (admittedly), the hate crimes against heterosexuals by homosexuals vs. hate crimes against homosexuals by
heterosexuals, etc. Showing exactly the reality behind marriage itself without homosexuals they’ll see they are no protecting everything just giving everyone the same rights. Then after marriage they should fight nationally to allow non std infected homosexuals to give blood. Did you know a straight man that has slept with a prostitute (admittedly) is allowed to give blood if they wait one year, but an openly gay man, even virgin, can not give blood at all? After that they need to change the rules of gay child adoption, so that the parents can adopt a child of choice whether it is ethnicity or sex. The more people realize
how unfair discrimination against gays is more than just marriage it might open their eyes towards voting in our favor, a slogan like “If you don’t help fix the problem, you are only contributing to hate.”
I say go for it, but go grassroots, not
just a media campaign. I have heard the
its about 60-40 now for the repeal of
Prop 8 in California. Repealing Prop 8
via the ballot would be a powerful message
to right-wing elements that use the fear
based demogougery to make their argument.
