Hospira, the Illinois-based company that manufactures sodium thiopental, will no longer manufacture the drug after Italy expressed concerns over the use of the anesthetic for capital punishment. The company’s factory is based outside Milan. This decision will certainly result in long delays in planned executions as states scramble to find legal alternatives.
